Working on a six weeks cycle, Salaam Foundation delivers 10 000 meat and veggies packs to families around Gauteng. The meat packs supplanted by healthy organic vegetables and groceries in some areas are delivered to various communities helping to fight the huge issue of food insecurity. Around eleven communities receive the packs and 15 areas are visited for home deliveries. We are going to be introducing some of these communities and the impact these meal packs have.
This week the focus is on Poortjie.
Poortjie is a small informal settlement in Gauteng, situated in the Sedibeng Municipality. There are just over ten thousand people who live in the area. The settlement is next to the Poortjie farm in the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Sedibeng, Gauteng.
Within the community, there is a huge Muslim community with a number of children attending the local madrassah run by Sheikh Mohammed. Salaam Foundation has been working with the community for a while providing meal packs featuring meat, vegetables and groceries. These packs are used to cook meals for the learners who attend the madrassah daily. The madrassah in Poortjie is another one of a number of madrassas that Salaam Foundation supports in the Gauteng area.
Sheikh Mohammed said they are grateful for all the support from Salaam Foundation. He said the meals have a huge impact on the children and their families. The children do not just eat the food they receive in madrassah but many take the food home and this is shared amongst their family members. The madrassah used to have around 90 learners. However, as the learners progress to higher grades, many do not attend the madrasah anymore. The madrasah now has a list of around 70 learners.
