During December 2024, both of the main pumping stations in the City of Johannesburg underwent major maintenance. The Eikenhof pump station underwent an 86-hour shutdown, while the Zwartkopjes pump station faced 36 hours of maintenance work. The two pump stations deliver purified water from the bulk supplier to two-thirds of Johannesburg’s CBD, the Deep South and the West. Many people across Johannesburg were without water for days as the system took time to recover – exacerbating the already dire water crisis in the city.

Despite the City’s promises of the provision of water tankers and alternative water sources, the scale of the crisis meant many people did not have access to water for days even going into weeks. The water maintenance crisis was worsened by the soaring temperatures that were being experienced.

The Salaam Foundation Search and Rescue team went out on the roads of the city of Johannesburg during the current massive water outages across the city to provide assistance to those in need. Starting in the Johannesburg South area alongside Madressah Ashraf-ul-Madaaris, the SFSR went to assist people. The team then expanded their reach as the crisis continued, visiting the Children of Fire charity in Auckland Park and Gift of Merificul Heart in Bosmont.

Once the water restoration from the affected pump stations began and the crisis abated, the team ended the water deliveries. However, there are plans in place to upscale the water delivery process as the water crisis in Johannesburg is only set to worsen.
