Welcome to Salaam Foundation’s series: The Humanitarian News Round-up. The team will be putting together a collection of news from around the world related to the humanitarian sector.
Israel’s banning on UNRWA
In continuing with its genocidal policies, the Israeli government voted in October to ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). This decision was met with widespread criticism as many governments and international organisations say this decision will exacerbate an already catastrophic situation in Gaza and the West Bank. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Tahani Mustafa, an expert on Israel and Palestine for International Crisis Group, a non-profit dedicated to conflict resolution, said: “The latest legislation is part of a campaign [by Israel] to kill any aid infrastructure,” “But it is also part of a broader objective to permanently remove Palestinians from their land.” UNRWA is one of the largest providers of aid to the people of Palestine and has been playing a huge role in supporting the people of Palestine particularly those in Gaza and the West Bank. Israel has been moving to ban many humanitarian organisations and media companies from operating in Gaza and the West Bank. They have often used the excuse that the staff members of these organisations are members of Hamas in order to carry out these bans. But these are all attempts to make life even more difficult for Palestinians.
Floods in the Eastern Cape 150 words
The Eastern Cape has been hit by severe flooding over the past couple of days which has left at least 10 people dead and has displaced more than 300 people. Heavy rains hit the province on Monday October 21 which caused extensive flooding by Wednesday October 23. The floods have destroyed roads and bridges in the affected areas which include Gqeberha and Kariega. The Nelson Mandela Bay area with Nelson Mandela Bay the worst affected. Thousands of families there were forced to evacuate. The destruction of the bridges also meant that school attendance was affected for thousands of learners. The area was last hit by terrible flooding in June and no measures were taken to mitigate the disaster happening again.
