690 million people around remained undernourished and hungry as of 2019. The current international chaos has not made it any easier. Hunger remains one of the greatest impediments to human growth and development.
Salaam Foundation has made this fight against global hunger a cornerstone of its operations. As such we have facilitated the setup of the Farm in the City. Using a small urban yard of around 850 square metres, our team has planted both organic and hydroponic vegetables. Check us on on Instagram
The vegetables are then distributed to people in food vulnerable situations as a means of alleviating their hunger. This provides much needed nutrition to people’s diets that are often lacking the wholesome goodness of vegetables. The project also aims to supply eggs and meats to balance the protein requirements.
Located in an urban setting at 90 Xavier Street, Robertsham, Johannesburg, the Farm in the City is ideally located to respond to the food challenges of a growing city population where prices of food are often out of the reach of many.
At a time of economic disparity, the project has already created 5 full time jobs and provides occasional work opportunists to several others.
