Salaam Foundation’s Ramadan programmes are a continuation of projects that take place throughout the year.

Salaam Foundation’s 10 000 Meals Programme happens throughout the year. Meat packs along with healthy organic vegetables are delivered by the Salaam Foundation team to various communities around the Gauteng area. In Ramadan, the regular deliveries are complemented by milk, bread and a hot meal. The distributions are also opened up to the volunteer group to allow the Salaam Foundation community to assist with the distributions and to see the progress of all the projects. Time was spent in each community on the day of the distribution. The areas of Mountain View, Bekkersdal, Riverlea, Tembia, Poortjie and Protea South were visited during this Ramadan.

Outside of South Africa, Iftaar meals were provided for families and masjids in Malawi.

This Ramadan, Salaam Foundation launched a Ramadan feeding programme in Malawi. During a site visit to the water wells project, the team became aware of another pressing issue which is that due to the dire economic situation in the country, many people cannot afford even the most basic food items like mielie meal. Many families do not eat for several days on end. The more rural areas suffer even more.

The people in the villages were concerned whether they will be able to observe the month as they do not even have enough to make the suhoor meal to begin their fasts and they do not have enough to open their fasts at the end of the day. A feeding programme was started for families and entire villages.

In February/March 2025, the team undertook the journey to Syria and Turkiye. Since 2016, Salaam Foundation has been assisting Syrian refugees living in Turkiye. The December 2024 fall of the longstanding Assad regime gave the team the chance to enter into Syria and do a thorough assessment of the situation on the ground and what is the best way forward to assist the people on the ground. In the days leading up to Ramadan, the Salaam Foundation team were able to deliver food assistance to some of the poorest communities in Syria which also gave people in the communities essential supplies to prepare for the month of Ramadan.

The #GazaKitchen continues to be of critical importance to people returning to their homes even as the Israeli onslaught continues with Israel breaking the ceasefire. Most Palestinians in Gaza have nothing but rubble to come back home to. Hot meals every day, especially in Ramadan, provide a most basic yet necessary point of support that’s needed immediately.

On February 11 2025, after a gruelling 18 hour journey from the capital Antananarivo to Manakara, the team arrived to distribute 12.5 tonnes of rice to communities in Madagascar. Salaam Foundation’s Azhar Vadi said that 500 bags of rice weighing in at 25kg were distributed to the community. This adds up to around 12.5 tonnes of rice. The food aid distributed was used by the people to prepare for the month of Ramadan.
