On the weekend of October 5, the 2024 #LemonAid campaign took place. Dozens of people held pop-ups all around the country for the campaign in support of the #GazaKitchen.

The #LemonAid campaign which started in 2021 is a twist on the lemonade stall idea – allowing children and adults to pop-up in their own spaces and raise funds for humanitarian causes. The LemonAid campaign had always raised money for Palestine with a focus on the different needs at the time. The 2024 #LemonAid campaign focused on raising money for Salaam Foundation’s Gaza Kitchen.

#LemonAid: Harnessing the power of children and lemonade to bring hope to Palestine

The Gaza Kitchen is a project operating in North Gaza which feeds thousands of families monthly. Operating in the open-air as a safety precaution, the kitchen consists of huge pots with meals being prepared daily for the families who are in desperate need. The kitchen recently started doing deliveries to families who are unable to come to the kitchen. Other projects are also being planned around the Gaza Kitchen.

#LemonAid 2024 is coming on October 05 in support of #GazaKitchen

Starting from October 3 and extending right until November, the #LemonAid campaign has received a lot of support from people in Gauteng and all around the country. On the main day of the campaign, October 5, vendors sat up their stalls outside their homes and local businesses. They used the day to sell their products to raise funds but also as a way to raise awareness of the Palestinian people’s plight.

Speaking on October 7, Salaam Foundation director, Fatima Sookharia said she and the Salaam Foundation team were grateful for all the support received from the people of South Africa for the people of Palestine.

She said: “The LemonAid campaign allowed South Africans to be active participants in a cause greater than themselves. This weekend saw an escalation of bombings in Northern Gaza – your funds from this campaign will be sent over to the Salaam Foundation Gaza Kitchen, in the north of Gaza and this will provide life saving support.”

In a video message received from Gaza, some of the children who are being assisted by the Gaza Kitchen expressed their thanks to the people of South Africa for the kitchen.
